Shapeshifter (a speculative liturgy)

Communicator Series no. 15, Poetic Research Bureau, 2220 Arts, + Archives, Los Angeles, CA (2026)

Multi-sensory, improvisational, chimeric, Shapeshifter addresses the audience as initiaites in a speculative trans*species liturgy. An overhead projector replaces the altar as a site of consecration and exegesis. Here, trans-coded, interspecies materials (including algaenated “plastic” fungal water and “frog eggs” soaked in blue lotus tea) are alchemized for collective consumption. Take this and drink. Take this and eat. Come forward to receive your mark.

This sacramental water, food, and mud are offered to the audience with eyedroppers and handbuilt vessels, incised with the liturgy’s kink-infused incantations with the support of ritually consecrated altar servers, Nico D’Entremont and Emji Saint Spero.

Liturgical texts and the illuminated altar painting become a shifting field of layered imagery and text: histology slides of tissue samples from the gonads, pituitary glands, and phalluses of sex-changing creatures accumulate into fields of overlapping color, shape, and texture obscuring the legibility of recent legislating purporting to dictate a binary and trans-exclusive definition of “biological sex.”

POISON ME, BLAME ME, CUT ME OPEN TO REVEAL MY IMPURITIES. FEAR MY TRANSCENDENCE OF CREATED CATEGORIES. GODLY. DO NOT AVERT YOUR GAZE.
